Archangel Dynamics TAC-FAK Review

The Archangel Dynamics TAC-FAK offers life essential wound care in an affordable package. The TAC-FAK comes in a 7.5 in x 5” leakproof and airtight LOKSAK. The LOKSAK is certified waterproof to 200 feet. The LOKSAK can also be used as an occlusive dressing (an air- and water-tight trauma medical dressing typically used in sucking chest wounds). (See page 3-4 {PDF Page 59} of  Army FM 4-25

The pack has four contents:

  • A Pair of Nitrile Gloves
  • A SWAT-T Tourniquet
  • An H&H Flat Compressed Gauze
  • TAC-FAK Trauma Kit Instructions

Nitrile Disposable Glove

The largest advantage of the Nitrile Gloves is that they are non-latex. Though only 1% of the US population, or 3 million people, are allergic to latex; having non-latex gloves in your first aid kit allows treatment of any patient without fear of exasperating the issue by causing an allergic reaction. Nitrile is also resistant to fuel and oils.

SWAT-T Tourniquet (See page 2-25 {PDF Page 59} of Army FM 4-25

The SWAT-T (Stretch Wrap and Tuck Tourniquet) is one of the most versatile tourniquet’s on the market.

The H&H Medical website lists the following information about the SWAT-T:

Use as a Tourniquet

Stretch for tourniquet-place above the wound (between wound and heart). Wrap tightly, ensuring ovals/rectangles change to circle/squares. And Tuck. (Pre-plan the tuck for best results)

In most patients, tourniquets have proven to be safe for a minimum of two hours.

When used properly all tourniquets may cause loss of limb. This is a necessary risk, to bring our patients home at the end of the day.

Use as a Pressure Dressing

When hemorrhage is controlled or for venous and capillary oozing.

Wrap the SWAT-T™ over hemostatic agent or sterile dressing then tuck or tape the end to maintain pressure, preventing further contamination and re-bleeding.

If the endpoints are met on the dressing you may have a tourniquet and should check for good blood return in the extremity (pulse and capillary refill), or you risk the complications associated with all tourniquets.

Pressure dressings should be left in place until definitive wound management can be accomplished.

Use as an Elastic Bandage

When you need to hold ice near sprains and strains, stabilize a twisted knee/ankle, sling a shoulder, among hundreds of other applications.

The dressing can also be used to loosely apply pressure across the chest or abdomen. This can be to help close and protect wounds, contain abdominal contents in evisceration, or to assist in stabilization of the pelvis in blunt pelvic trauma.

The SWAT-T™ can be used to splint an extremity to the body, other leg, or to a rigid object for immobilization.

Other uses of the SWAT-T: It is also the same multifunction trauma care device that has been used to create a snare, create a Hawaiian sling, patch a kayak, mend a ski boot binding, patch a leaking fire hose on a fire scene, and mend a boot (sole separating on rugged hike).

Flat Compressed Gauze

There are four yards of compressed gauze included in the TAC-FAK. The H&H Flat Compressed Gauze is made of USP Type VII compliant 6-ply cotton. The compressed size makes it perfect size in the minimal sized TAC-FAK.

Conclusion

For less than $40 this is the perfect EDC Individual First Aid Kit (IFAK). It provides just enough gear to save a life, and is light and easy to carry. The contents are high quality. It is also obvious that Archangel thought carefully about what to include in the kit. Just the fact that they chose nitrile gloves over latex, shows they wanted the kit to be able to be used by anyone in the life saving situation. Choosing compressed gauze over rolled gauze, shows that they were concerned with saving space and providing more gauze despite the costs to them. Lastly, choosing the SWAT-T over other tourniquets, such as the CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) means they were more concerned with providing multi-use over single use tourniquets that are easier to apply one handed.
