Keeping an Eye Out: Situational Awareness

What if I were to ask you what the definition of “Situational Awareness”. Would you be able to tell me, your family or neighbor? Most people would say “it’s the area surrounding my current position or place.”

Here is the internet’s very short definition. “Situational Awareness is the ability to identify, process, and comprehend information about how to survive in an emergency situation. More simply, it’s knowing what is going on around you.”

What if I told you that there is more to it than that. Knowing your current location is great but about your evacuation points at your work or store, the unattended vehicle in front of the store without a license plate and the engine on, someone wearing a trench coat or duster in the summer time, that package you received at work with a hand-written shipping label? Has your radar turned on yet? It should have.

When I walk through a store with my wife, she continuously tells me to shut off my radar. Just like every typical husband, do you think I listen? Not a chance. How am I able to do this you may ask? Believe it or not, I have reported and/or responded to nine (9) bomb threats or large explosion situations in the last eleven (11) years here in Arizona. I have been trained to watch people and obstacles around me and look forward if an emergency were to occur. Have you ever seen someone in a grocery store or in an airport and they have that look of confusion or appear to have that lost look upon their face? Guess what, this was your first lesson on situational awareness.

A few years ago, one of our neighbor’s daughter was grabbed by a stranger wearing a hoodie directly in front of her home as she was walking to the bus stop. Lucky for her she got away. I asked my wife, if she had noticed our neighbor’s daughter being grabbed from behind and dragged away, what would she do?

She told me, and I quote “I’d run that sucker down and run him over”! My wife’s brain isn’t trained to take another human life or let alone run someone over, but she is more aware of her surroundings after that event. I hear time after time it always takes an event to make someone aware or wake them up. I
continuously hear that old phrase, it will never happen to me. It can, and it will.

My company Due Guard Security takes training to the next level. We put you in a security life threatening situation and we make you find your own way out. We can show you how to scan, respond, escape, report and so much more. I recently instructed a short version of our Active Shooter – Are You Prepared Course and one of the students who at the time I had no idea he was a former Seal Team Six member from way back when. He told me after class he was very impressed, and our message needs to get out. So the questions is, are you prepared?
